2006 Power Surge Tryouts

Posted by Kama Kalalau at Oct 31, 2005 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
Aloha Power Surge,
Welcome back everyone and I hope your school season is going well. Yes, it is that time again to gear up for the 2005-2006 club volleyball season.
I finally got confirmed dates for the gym so our tryouts will be at Spanaway Lake HS (SLHS) gym as follows. A parent/guardian must attend the parent meeting and is encouraged to stay for the tryouts. Be prepared to sign lots of paper work and write checks.
Sunday 6 Nov.
Noon to 12:30 PM: Setup Courts
12:30 PM to 1:00 PM: Parent Meeting: U12s, U13s, & U14s
1:30 PM to 3:30 PM: Tryouts, U12s, U13s, & U14s
3:30 PM to 4 PM: Organize teams
4 PM to 5 PM: Recalls/Finalize as necessary
Sunday 13 Nov. - Gym Not Available due to the Annual Craft Fair
Sunday 20 Nov.
12:30 to 1 PM: Setup Courts
1 PM to 1:30 PM: Parent Meeting: U15s & U16s
1:30 PM to 3:00 PM: Tryouts, U15s & U16s
3:00 PM to 3:30 PM: Parent Meeting: U17s & U18s
3:30 PM to 5 PM: Tryouts, U17s & U18s
5 PM to 6 PM: Recalls/Finalize as necessary
This season, you must first attend and participate in the appropriate age-based tryout session, no exceptions. During or after a tryout, a player may be moved up based on need and skill. As you can see, the tryout schedule does not provide enough time to really get a good look at a player's skill, knowledge, attitude, or commitment. Power teams for example, are for the most skilled and the most committed. So, during the months of Dec, Jan, and Feb, players will continue to be evaluated. Players can and will be moved up or down until the 1 April 2006 deadline when final team rosters are due to the region.
Here are the cutoff dates which determine which tryout you need to attend.
U18, If you were born on or after September 1, 1987 (Mostly 12th Graders)
U17, If you were born on or after September 1, 1988 (Mostly 11th Graders)
U16, If you were born on or after September 1, 1989 (Mostly 10th Graders)
U15, If you were born on or after September 1, 1990 (Mostly 9th Graders)
U14, If you were born on or after September 1, 1991 (Mostly 8th Graders)
U13, If you were born on or after September 1, 1992 (Mostly 7th Graders)
U12, If you were born on or after September 1, 1987 (Mostly 6th Graders and below)
Another more simple way to figure out which tryout to attend is to determine what your age will be on 31 Aug 2006. That will be the tryout age group you must attend.
Coaches will also be finalized after tryouts. If there is a WIAA conflict, the coach will be reassigned. I must remind everyone that tryouts are for the explicit purpose of placing players on a team, not a specific team, not with a specific player(s), and not with a specific coach.

Super Sunday, 6 Feb, Results

Posted by Kama Kalalau at Feb 7, 2005 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
Our goal at each tournament is to make it to the Gold Division.  Why, because that is where the region's best are.  In a huge tournament like this past Sunday, making the Gold Division is especially special. When you play against the best, you see what can be and you play better.  And the more you play the best, the less intimidated you become of them.  Once you get over the fear, then you can begin to seriously compete and BELIEVE you can win.  By regionals, you all will be there.  And when you return to school ball next year, you will be the intimidator, not the intimidated.
If you don't get into the Gold Division, the next best thing is to win the Silver Division.  That's exactly what our 14-1s did, the only team to return with a Championship, their first this year.  Great job ladies.  Your pizza party awaits at our next practice.
Here are our Super Sunday results...
    18s - U18 D1 Gold Division, Tied for 9th out of 20
    17s - U17 D1 Gold Division, Tied for 3rd out of 12
    16s - U16 D1 Diamond Division, 2nd
    15-1s - U15 D1, Gold Division, Tied for 5th out of 16
    15-2s - U15 D2, Silver Division, 2nd
    14-1s - U14 D1, Silver Division Champions
    14-2s - U14 D2, Silver Division, Tied for 3rd
Of the 5 Power Teams (Teams entered in D1 of their age group), 3 made it to the D1 Gold Division, and one won the D1 Silver Championship.  Not bad at all for February.  Keep up the good work!

January's Players of the Month

Posted by Kama Kalalau at Feb 3, 2005 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
Coaches have selected the following players as their "Player of the Month" for the month of January.  They evaluated their players and made their selections based on the following criteria.
    a.  Points: 1 - 5, Perfect or near perfect attendance at practices and tournaments
    b.  Points: 1 - 5, Great attitude, positive, teachable, respectful
    c.  Points: 1 - 5, Great hustle on the court, always gives 100%
    d.  Points: 1 - 5, Team Player, always encouraging teammates on the court and on the bench.
    e.  Points 1 - 5, Other - Coaches may add their own criterion, i.e. skill, contribution, stats, etc.
Congratulations ladies.  Keep up the good work.
Power Surge 14 Rocky:  Peyton Lemke
Power Surge 14 Jordyn:  Kiana Perez
Power Surge 15 Kara:  Samantha Bailey
Samantha Bailey is the Player Of The Month on the 15-1 team for numerous reasons. Samantha has a great attitude both on and off the court.  And in tournaments as well as practices, she always gives 100% - Coach Kara
Power Surge 15 Karla:  Brandi Best
Brandi Best is the Player of the Month for the U15-2 team.  Just in this short amount of time playing, Brandi has showed exceptional leadership.  Not only is she showing great skills and leadership on the court, her team looks up to her off the court as well.  What's very important is that Brandi has an overall great attitude which is beneficial to the team's success.  Great job Brandi! - Coach Karla
Power Surge 16 Andrea:  Lizzy Davis
Power Surge 17 Jason:  Anjelika Gouveia
Power Surge 18 Kama:  Katie Johnson
Katie is a great libero for us and has such a great attitude.  In practices I often let every player do everything, i.e. hit quicks, slides, backrow, and even set.  Katie is the shortest person on our team, but she'll get up there and hit that quick and slide with the best, never a word of complaint.  She's not a setter but one day I made her set and she got in there and gave it her best shot.  The whole time I never heard her say, "I can't do it."  In a game, a server aced her a few times with some very well placed short serves.  She never got down on herself, always shook it off and focused on the next point.  She's a gem.  - Coach Kama

January's Perfect Attendance

Posted by Kama Kalalau at Jan 31, 2005 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
The following players had perfect attendance in the month of January, excluding tonight's practice, 31 Jan.  Although perfect attendance doesn't guarantee that you will become an Olympic player, it is a fundamental requirement and key ingredient to every Olympic player's road to success.  I place a lot of value on attendance, particularly perfect attendance, because nothing else speaks to me more clearly about your commitment and your character than your attendance.  Many talk about commitment, but few demonstrate it with their deeds.  Congratulations ladies.
