Power Surge Picnic, 3 June, SLHS Gym

Posted by Kama Kalalau at May 31, 2006 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Our final event of the season is coming up this Saturday, 3 June 2006, the Power Surge Picnic at SLHS gym.

Every year at our picnic parents get to play the girls. But because we have so many teams this season, we scheduled those matches earlier in May.  Hope you all had a great time!

T
his year we're going to have a club-wide playoff at the picnic instead.  And the winner of this playoff will play the coaches.  By the way, our coaches have never lost this final match ever.  But you never know, this could be the year, especially after the way the 18-1s have been playing lately.  I still believe our coaches will continue their winning ways.

How will the playoff work?  Generally, we will start with the youngest team challenging the next oldest team.  The winner of that match plays the next oldest team, and so on.  The challenge continues until the final winning team plays the 18-1s.  The winner of that match plays the coaches.  To expedite things, the mini tournament will be modified somewhat and played on two courts (1 & 3) at the same time.  Court 4 (small gym) will be used for warm ups and for parents to play those teams who are not playing in the playoffs.

Ever wonder if the 14-1s played the 15-1s, who would win?  Well, the 15-1s just barely won at Kitsap recently.  Want a rematch 14-1s?  How about the 14-2s playing the 15-2s?  Do you know who would win that match? How about the 15-1s against the 16-1s, the 16-1s vs. the 18-1s, or the 15-2s vs. the 16-2s?  There's all kinds of speculation going on out there and this mini tournament will settle those nagging questions once and for all.  So bring your game ladies, because the score will be settled on Saturday, 3 June.

Here is a tentative schedule of events for our Picnic.  Times are approximate.

2006 Summer League Team Assignments

Posted by Kama Kalalau at May 31, 2006 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
I want to remind everyone that summer league is starting up right away.  In fact our first matches start Monday and Wednesday evenings, 5 & 7 June respectively.

Once again, unlike club ball, summer league is when everyone gets to play.  Notice though, I did not say that everyone has equal playing time.  We still play to win, and I won't take you out of a game unless you are stinking up the court really badly.  Also, this is a high school league, so depending on who we're playing, if you can't get above the net to block, you may not get to play in the front row.  Bottom line, your performance will still determine what kind of playing time you get, so play smart, and play with confidence.  If you are lost out there because you don't know the plays, I cannot have you in the front row either.

The uniform is your Power Surge jerseys, black spandex shorts, black knee pads, black sox.  Bring both jerseys to the game each night as we will be alternating jerseys and the libero could be anyone.

If we don' have enough players one night, some of you may need to swing, if you are available and if you are not already playing elsewhere (Fife league).  Let me know as soon as possible by email if you cannot make a match so I can swing people as needed.  You can email me at powersurgevb@hotmail.com

Here are the team assignments.  I basically put the older players on one team and the younger players on the other team, making sure we at least have a couple setters on each team.  Also, some of you are playing in the Fife league on Monday evenings so you obviously cannot play the same evening at Lakewood Community Center (LCC), where our matches will be played.  Please be at LCC at least 30 minutes before our first scheduled match each night so I can make the lineup.  I almost always make the line-up based on who shows up on time (hint!).

Practice will be scheduled at SLHS gym if we can get some gym time.  Our next two practices are tentatively scheduled for Tuesday evenings, 6 & 13 June, 6 to 8 PM.  Thereafter, practices will most likely be on Mondays, 10 AM to 12 Noon.  Initially if we need a second practice, it will be Wednesday 10 AM to 12 Noon.

Goals for Summer League...
            -  Learn the Plays.  Learn plays 5, 6, 7, & 8 and how to execute them correctly.
            -  Continue Developing Individual Skills.  This is something you'll be working on forever.
            -  Learn To Play With Confidence.  It doesn't just happen.  You have make yourself do it until it comes naturally.
            -  Be a Team Player.  Do you know what that means?
            -  Learn to Play Team Defense.  Many players are clueless about how to play defense and have picked up some very bad habits.  We're going to fix that, because defense is what wins matches.

Not everyone has email so please help get the word out.  If you did not get this email, chances are I don't have your email address, especially those players who did not play with us this past season.  Or if your email address changed, let me know.  If you have any questions, you can also call me at 253-535-5163.

Finally, if you haven't given me your money yet, please bring it to our next match or practice.
