March 2007 Practice Schedule

Posted by Kama Kalalau at Feb 28, 2007 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
Practice Policy - Practices are mandatory.  If you miss a practice for whatever reason, you get to sit out an entire match at the next tournament.  There are many legitimate reasons for missing practice, but the reason for missing practice does not exempt anyone from the "sit out" policy.  Also, any time you miss a practice, you are required to notify your coach in advance.  School functions (i.e. sports, band concerts, plays, etc.) do take precedence over our practices, but it does not exempt you from the "sit out" policy.  If you are late to practice or have to leave practice early for any reason, the "sit out" policy does not apply to you.  And the point here is for everyone to make the effort to get to practice, even if you can't stay the entire time, especially when there are many competing priorities that are much more important than volleyball practice.  But, we all made a commitment to each other and we all need to keep those commitments.  Commitment is something you do, not something you just talk about.  Show your commitment with your deeds and not just with your words.  See you all at practice!

March Payment Due!!!  Attention everyone!  If you are not caught up with your payments for club dues, please get caught up by mailing your payment to me ASAP.  You will not be allowed to play this weekend, 3-4 March, until your account is current.  Unless you have made special arrangements with Bonnie, everyone should have paid for Dec06, Jan07, and Feb07 by now.  Final payment is due on 1 March.  Call or email me if you have any questions about your account.

IMPORTANT AND URGENT INFORMATION FOR ALL TO READ.
Just got this on 28 Feb.  Please pass the word along!  Small gym no longer available due to batting cages.

There are two things we need to adhere to in order to continue using the gym at SLHS.

     1)  Do not show up too early.  We are not allowed in the gym until 6 PM.
     2)  Be sure the floor plates/covers are replaced over the holes for the poles.

If we do not respect these two requirements, we will not be allowed to continue practicing at SLHS.  The floor plates came up missing twice already this season.  One more time and we will be tossed out.  Showing up too early also causes problems for the school because no one can be in the gym outside of their scheduled times.  Parents, please pick up your kids at least 15 minutes before the end of practice as we must vacate the school grounds by the end time, 9 PM usually during weeknights.  Coaches, be sure your team meetings are concluded well before the end time so everyone can vacate the area by the end time.

The Yakima/Northwest Jamboree is coming up 17-18 Mar.  Although most of us will be leaving for Yakima on Fri 16 Mar, some of you may be able to leave early Saturday morning instead because your tournament schedule may start at noon (U12s) or 2 PM Saturday (Some teams in the Challenge/D2 Divisions).  Be aware also that things can change so if you change your reservations, you may do so at your own risk.  And, if you do change your reservations to arrive early Saturday morning because of the late Saturday start, be careful that your hotel accommodation for Saturday evening is not jeopardized.  As always, players stay with their parents and each family is responsible for their own hotel accommodations, and transportation to and from their respective gym locations in Yakima.  Coaches/Team parent/rep, please compile a list of your players' hotel accommodations and phone numbers so you can contact them in case there are changes at the mandatory 9 PM Friday evening 16 Mar coaches' meeting

February 2007 Practices

Posted by Kama Kalalau at Jan 23, 2007 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
Gyms are very limited during Jan & Feb each year due to the basketball (boys and girls) and wrestling seasons.  As a result, it is not uncommon for our practices to be scheduled in the late evenings during this period.  Thank you all for your patience as we try to work through this difficult period each season.

And the point here is for everyone to make the effort to get to practice, even if you can't stay for the entire time, especially when there are many competing priorities that are much more important than volleyball practice.  But, we all made a commitment to each other and we all need to keep those commitments.  Commitment is something you do, not something you just talk about.  Show your commitment with your deeds and not just with your words.  See you all at practice!

IMPORTANT AND URGENT INFORMATION FOR ALL TO READ.
Just got this today 28 Feb.

     6 PM to 7:30 PM at Thompson Elementary12-2 & 13-2
     7:30 PM to 9 PM at Thompson Elementary12-1 & 13-1

     6:00 PM to 7:30 PM at SLHS, 15-1s & 14-1s Ct. 3
6:00 PM to 7:30 PM at SLHS, Boys Ct. 1
Note:  3 teams sharing 2 1/2 courts, 1 hour full court time per team.

7:30 PM to 9 PM at SLHS, 18s Ct. 1

Sun 14 Jan 2006, Kitsap U18 Tourney
Our 16s entered in this tournament after our 15-1s were accepted into the MLK invite at the last minute.  Coming very close to getting into the gold division at this U18 tourney, our 16s played well in the morning to finish strong in the silver division.

Sun 14 Jan 2006, Evergreen U12 Tourney
Both 12s entered this tournament at Evergreen State College.  Not to be outdone by the other Power teams, our 12 Black team take home the Gold Championship.  Here are the reports from the coaches.

Coach Miko (12-1) - We finished first in our pool and first in the whole tournament. We didn't even lose a single set all day!  We played great! It was so much fun to see the girls playing hard and enjoying themselves. Also, I truly feel that all of the girls had something to contribute to this win.

Sun 14 Jan 2006, SFY U15 Tourney, Highline CC
15-2s go 2 for 2 in pool and earn a spot in the gold division.  They finish 9th out of 24 teams after losing in the first round of tournament play.  Congratulations ladies, keep it up!

Sat 13 Jan 2006, Kitsap U14 Tourney
We entered 4 teams in this tournament: both 14s and both 13s.  14 Black made the biggest splash by defeating Club Tacoma in the finals to take the Gold Championship.  Our 14 Black team lost to Club Tacoma the weekend before in a very close one-setter, so beating them here in the finals was so sweet.  To get to the finals however, 14 Black had to play our 13 Black team in the first round of tournament play, then our 14 Gold team in the second round.  Here's the coaches' reports.....

Coach Doug (14 Black) - Powersurge U14-1 team had a fantastic weekend!  We ended the Kitsap Juniors Volleyball Tournament in first place due to the outstanding team work and determination of all 12 team members.  In our third match we beat the Tacoma Panthers ending the day with a 6-0 record.  I'm very pleased to have a team with so much camaraderie and such outstanding parent support.  We look forward to a successful season.
Coach Kama:  This is a new team with a new coach, new players, and a new attitude!  Great job!

Coach Mark (14 Gold) - The team went into morning pool play looking a bit like a team that had no practice the previous week.  Combined with a few changes to the attack and blocking schemes, the team played sluggish and split a pair of sets in their first pool play with the eventual 4th place team.  With their usual super effort and never quit attitudes, the team picked it up from there and took the next four sets from the remaining teams in the pool to finish with the first seed for the afternoon.  In the quarterfinals, we were looking at the team that had squeaked by us in the single 25 point game the previous week at Columbia JH and they turned out to be our hosts as well.  Well hosts or not, we swept them aside to move into the semi-finals against the 14 Black team.  Friendships on hold, Gold wanted to leave as much doubt in the minds of Black as possible.  In the first set, the superior power of the Blacks forced us to try and step up our game to a level we had never had been at before.  By the time we began to click, Black had already taken set one easily.  Set two however Gold push Black much further than the other teams, all even into the 20's.  Black managed a final push and took the match and the opportunity to play for the tournament.  We went home with 3rd place and our heads high knowing we are capable of playing above the levels we have been so far.

Sat-Sun 13-15 Jan 2006, MLK Invite
MLK is an invitational where only the very best teams in the Northwest are invited to show their stuff before local college coaches and recrecruiters.  This year Power Surge sent two teams to MLK:  the 18s and 15 Black.   Our 18s get a slow start on the first day but finishes strong by competing and staying close to their opponents on the second day.  15 Black also get a slow start on Day 1 but finishes with a vengeance on Day 2 with an overall game record of 9 wins and 6 losses.  Here's coach Tony's report....

Aloha Kama and the whole Power Surge Club!  This is Coach Tony coming to you with the MLK Invitation update. Our U15 Black team got the last minute invite to enter this U16
Tournament.
We started Saturday morning by playing the Portland 16 White team. We started out very rough the first two games, I thought my girls were still sleeping. We lost the first two games with the scores of 14-25, 17-25 and won the third game 25-18.
Our second match, we played Rain City 16 Lokahi, they beat us in three games with the scores of 19-25, 20-25, and 22-20. It was a tough loss, but by now we started to play some volleyball.
Our third match we faced Nike NW Air Max. We won the first game 25-20, lost the second 19-25, and won the third game 25-19.
We finally came alive in our fourth match on Saturday when we played NW Juniors 16 Storm and defeated them 25-19, 25-19, and 25-17. Our girls played together, the hitters were hitting and the passers were passing. We finished the first day with six wins and six losses.
On Sunday our girls picked up right where they left off. Our fifth and final match we defeated Team Webfoot from Portland. The scores were 26-24, 25-16, and 25-15. We ended up with  9 wins and 6 losses and I think we got 7th place overall out of 24 teams.
As a coach, I am very proud and excited about our team. Now at last I would like to congratulate and recognize Kayla Reno as our team's MLK Tournament MVP with 38 Kills, 7 Blocks, and 14 Digs.  GREAT JOB U15 BLACK!

Sat-Sun 6-7 Jan 2006 PSR Ranking League
Huge tournaments for 18s, 17s, 14s and 13s, the PSR Ranking League.
     - 18s start off in 7th overall but finish 18th after tournament play on Sun 7 Jan.
     - 17s struggle and finish 46th.
     - 14 Black start off 11th out of 58 teams and finishes strong on Sun 7 Jan to move into 10th overall.
     - 14 Gold makes the biggest gain by leaping into the 31st position from 50th overall.
     - 13 Black flexes their power as they move into the 19th spot from 24th.  But among just the 13s, they are firmly established in 4th place.
     - 13 Gold moves up a couple notches to finish in 55th.

Sun 7 Jan 2006, Cowlitz U12 Tourney, Longview, WA
Both our 12s entered in this tournament and both finished in the gold division.  Our 12 Black team finished 3rd overall.

Sat 30 Dec 2006, Cowlitz U18 & U16 Tourney, Longview, WA
15 Black make a big splash on the shores of Longview by defeating the host team, Cowlitz 16 Asics in 3 games in the Gold Championships, 15-8 in the 3rd and final game.  18s, 17s, and 16s all finish in gold but lose their first round matches in tournament play.  15 Gold finishes strong in the silver division.

Coach Tony (15-1) - Aloha Kama and the entire Power Surge Club. Happy New Year to everyone.  Here is the update and the highlights of our first tournament of the year.  It was a great start for us.
In our pool play we defeated Bridgetown Orange 25-9 and 25-7. Our second match we defeated Power Surge 16 Black 25-15 and 25-18.  Our third match we defeated Reach VC U15 25-18 and 25-11. We finished pool play with 6-0 and +72 points spread that put us in the #1 seed going into the playoff.
On the first round of playoff we defeated Power Surge 16 Black 25-16 and 25-8. We then played Cowlitz Blue and we defeated them 25-13 and 25-8. And for the final and the championship, we faced Cowlitz U16 Black Asics their number #1 U16 team. They gave us our first game lost of the day with the score of 25-23.  They had high hopes that they were going to beat us, but my girls did not give up and we defeated them 27-25. The third and final game, the girls took it to the next level, and defeated them 15-8 for the Championship.
Our girls played together like real champions. Congratulations U15 Black (We are Power Surge).

Coach Amanda (16s) - The girls did very well for their first tournament .  They played very well together.  I think this is the first team I had that has done this well together at their first tournament.  When we played our 15-1s the second time in tourney play, we did a great job.  We should have won that game.  Our girls were working together very well and each player was contributing towards the team, and not playing as individuals.  I was very pleased at how they all played against our 15-1s in that first game of tournament play. That is the team I know they can be.

12-1s try to improve from 3rd to 1st.  15-1s get a tough break in the seeding and even with a stellar performance, can only improve from the Bronze division to the Silver.  More to come...

Note:  Competitive Edge (CE) Owner, Mr. Joe Albers, has agreed to give our club a special presentation of the services offered by his company.  CE has been instrumental in developing and training our area's top athletes in almost every sport for several years.  Because our court time is limited, we are not able to spend time developing our players' strength, conditioning, quickness, and stamina, important components in any training regiment.  Therefore, players must train on their own outside of our regular practices in order to develop their physical abilities.  But, unless you are a very disciplined person, it is difficult to stick to a congruent and effective training program.  Mr. Albers and his staff can provide that training program for the serious athlete.  My hope is that our club will be able to incorporate CE's services into our volleyball program for a reasonable price.

     7:30 PM to 9 PM at TE - 12-1s and 13-1s

8 PM to 9 PM at Competitive Edge - 14s, 15s, 16s, 17s, & 18s.  Please be there 15 minutes early so the CE presentation can start on time.
